PADI Open Water Course is a first-level diving certification. It will teach you how to dive to a depth of 12-18 meters, with a friend, anywhere in the world. If you don’t know what PADI is,it stands for Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) is the world’s largest recreational diving and diving training organization founded in 1966 by John Cronin and Ralph Erickson. This is a well-known and recognized diving organization, meaning that by having a PADI certification, you can dive anywhere globally.
Trying to get certified is not the same as regular diving. You need the commitment to follow the lessons and complete the entire online course. It is necessary to complete the online study, not only as a requirement for a certificate but also to introduce you to the diving theory that will keep you safe underwater.
Dive Centre Trawangan Stingray Divers, located on Gili Trawangan island northwest of Lombok,Indonesia PADI Open Water Course is done flexibly and organized. That means we can offer several variations of the schedule. But before you start exploring the ocean,PADI requires you to complete an online course that lasts about 2 days.
With the PADI e-learning platform you can learn theory or develop knowledge, this means we need to understand a little about diving theory so that we can do scuba diving safely. You can download the programs from PADI and do all the theory and learning from home.
This is a very time-saving option,as it will shorten your course. Next, just set a schedule to go to the Dive Centre to complete the swimming pool session and go to the sea. The entire diving course lasts 3 days.
If you haven’t heard of the Gili Islands,it consists of three small islands northwest of Lombok,Indonesia. The names of the islands are Gili Trawangan,Gili Air,and Gili Meno. Of the three islands,Gili Trawangan is a favourite of tourists. It is also the largest of the three islands.

Frequently asked questions
One of the common questions we get is,what skills will I learn during this course?
Of course,we will teach you the basics such as breathing and swimming underwater. But we also tackle skills that deal with minor issues or major emergencies. We teach you to manage the air, plan your dives, and be a safe diver.
PADI Open Water Course is a diving course over three days and can be completed on a full-time or part-time basis.
- Day 1:Introduction to scuba equipment and skill training in the pool
- Day 2:Two open water dives and skills training
- Day 3:Two open water dives and skills training
Day 1
Introduction of scuba equipment and skill training in the swimming pool. The instructor will explain the equipment that must be used by divers:
- Tank
- BCD
- Regulator
- Mask
- Boots
- Fins
- Wetsuit
The first thing you must do is familiarize yourself with the equipment in a way that you have to assemble and disassemble it a maximum of 3 times until you are fluent, before going down to the pool.
Trawangan Stingray Divers have swimming pool facilities that have a depth of up to 3 meters. But don’t worry, you will start the skill training at the shallow end and when you feel more comfortable,we will dive into deeper waters. The benefit of practicing your pool skills is so you can perfect your buoyancy as a diver, making you eco-friendlier when you go out to the reef. During the course, your instructor will demonstrate skills first and then ask you to repeat them. But don’t worry, this is a performance-based course, meaning you will need some time to perfect each skill before moving on to the next stage.
Day 2
On day 2,you will complete 2 dives in the sea with some skills previously taught by the instructor in the pool. The steps you take include:
- Before going to the sea make sure you drink enough water to keep the body hydrated, this is very important because when scuba diving nitrogen gas from the air you breathe is formed in your body tissues. Keeping the tissues hydrated allows your body to safely release the gases that build up as you slowly rise to the surface at the end of the dive.
If you climb too fast, your body can’t release nitrogen gas safely enough, and bubbles form in your joints, tissues, and bloodstream, resulting in what’s known as BENDS/DECOMPRESSION SICKNESS. - Travel to the sea by boat, while on the boat the instructor will give a brief briefing about the dive sites and what to do in the water. The instructor tells you to double-check the equipment you are using and that it’s ready before you go down into the water. You will dive with a maximum depth of 12 meters and always be supervised by your instructor. At the start of each dive,we will repeat a series of skills that you have practiced while in the pool, usually taking 5 – 10 minutes at the start of each dive. Once we complete the skill,we explore and look for every kind of marine life you can imagine. The most important thing is that when you dive, you can’t touch anything, and you can’t touch the reef. Just enjoy the underwater beauty and drift with the current.
Day 3
On day 3,you will once again complete 2 dives in the sea and refine the skills you have learned and strengthen the training. This is the last day you will complete the course. The steps you will take are:
- You will dive at a depth of 18 meters
- You will learn to use the Dive Computer, learn some basic compass and navigation skills and, refine your dive planning knowledge
- Depending on the course options you choose, there are times for fun dives. This is the last part of learning, where you can perfect all the skills you learn and strengthen your training by enjoying the beautiful scenery under the sea.
- Learn new skills and knowledge
- See marine life in its natural environment
- Get out of your comfort zone
- Be a more independent diver
- Make new friends from all over the world
